Speaker Series – Building a Better Income Security System for Canada

Nov 8, 2016

“A Basic Income Guarantee ensures everyone an income sufficient to meet basic needs and live with dignity, regardless of work status.”

Kingston, Ontario (November 25, 2016)

This event will discuss three important projects being led by residents from the Kingston area that are focused on major reform of our income security system.

Toni Pickard will describe the work of the Kingston Action Group for a Basic Income Guarantee, which she co-founded and coordinates. She’ll explain the values and principles which govern the group’s concept of an effective and humane basic income, their two major advocacy goals and their current initiatives in pursuit of those goals.

Hugh Segal will outline the proposal he has developed for the Ontario Government on the design and implementation of a Basic Income Pilot Project. His report was recently released for public consultation. The Ontario government will be announcing in early 2017 how it plans to implement one or more pilot projects.

George Thomson will describe the work being done by the Working Group on Income Security which he leads and which has been asked by the Ontario Government to develop a roadmap for income security reform by the summer of 2017.
