2024 AFP SEO Outstanding Philanthropist Award:
Ian Fraser and Janine Schweitzer
The Community Foundation for Kingston & Area is very pleased to share that Ian Fraser and Janine Schweitzer are being recognized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Southeastern Ontario’s (AFPSEO) with the “Outstanding Philanthropist” award on November 14, which is National Philanthropy Day.
Ian and Janine have had an indelible impact on our community. Their philanthropic efforts are focused on building long-lasting, sustainable change. They have strategically diversified their giving, contributing to innovative programs in areas such as health, art, food security, community infrastructure, and general support for charities that serve to assist our community members.
Their unique approach to philanthropy is informed by Ian’s extensive experience in the field and Janine’s passion for community development. As a consultant in philanthropy, Ian actively engages with Canadian charities to establish and strengthen legacy gift-planning programs. Through his work with Gift Funds Canada, he promoted and advanced the practice of philanthropy nationwide. Their shared passion for advancing access to healthcare for Canadians and the advancement of innovative strategies within the area of healthcare, along with their desire to build community resilience, has fueled their many philanthropic endeavours in southeastern Ontario.
Understanding the significance of strategic planning and the capacity of philanthropic organizations, Ian and Janine have generously supported the Community Foundation for Kingston & Area for three decades, contributing since its inception in 1995. Their contributions have focused on providing community members with access to food, supporting the Kingston Symphony, and developing community-led infrastructure projects. They have also significantly aided the University Hospital Kingston Foundation, supported Girls Inc., and, most notably, consistently backed the operations of the Community Foundation itself. This support has enabled the Community Foundation to increase its capacity and growth, thereby better-serving community organizations and those who rely on their services.
In philanthropy, there is often a perception that “excessive” funds are directed toward organizational overhead, rather than direct programming and services. However, it is contributors like Ian and Janine who invest in the community by supporting skilled organizations and effective systems. Their investments have enabled, and continue to enable, organizations like the Community Foundation to scale up and fulfill their missions.
