The Kingston School of Art Opens Its Studios

Apr 17, 2017

“A supportive atmosphere, with a focus on art, and the occasional, objective view of a fellow artist always at hand.” ~ Yvonne Fox, who uses the Community Studio program.

Kingston artists who don’t have space in their homes for their creative work are now able to access the two studios at the Kingston School of Art (KSOA). Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation for Kingston and Area, the KSOA is starting up a new Community Studio program.

The program starts now and is divided into two 5-month terms, from February to the end of June, and from September until the end of next January.  The cost is $100 per term. Storage lockers are also available to allow Community Studio members to leave their art supplies in a safe place between visits. The school is accessible and centrally located at Princess and Victoria streets. Barb Carr, board member of the KSOA, says “The KSOA’s aim is to nurture a community of artists who will make our studios their creative work space.”

This grant from the Community Foundation enabled us to purchase the storage lockers that are so useful to the artists. Instead of taking all their paints, brushes and canvases back and forth to the KSOA, they now have a place to leave them, ready to be used the next time they come in to paint. It’s great to see our studios being used outside of regular scheduled class times, and to see the interaction of the artists as they make this space their art home away from home.
