Reflections on a Summer Working with the Community Foundation

“Working with the Foundation has made me stronger and better equipped to take on the next chapter in my life.”

Before I started working with the Community Foundation in July, I had a very limited understanding of their work and the vast impact they have on Kingston and its surrounding areas.

Within my first few days, it became apparent to me that the Foundation is an incredibly special organization, that not only fosters community growth, but is driven by a team that truly cares about our community and its continued wellbeing.

Every day I would learn something new about the organization, from publications to granting programs, and it never ceased to amaze me all of the ways the Foundation cultivates community action in the Kingston area.

Kingston has been my home for the past 5 years, and during this time I have grown to love the spirit of the city and the people that live here. This passion has helped me connect to the Foundation’s mission and work hard to ensure my contributions are significant.

Throughout my 8-week contract, I had the opportunity to write content for the blog and e-newsletter, work on various marketing projects, and make updates to the Community Foundation website. These accomplishments have allowed me to hone my skills and give me insight into a new and exciting career path.

Next week, I will be moving to Toronto to pursue my Master’s degree. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my last few weeks in Kingston, than to help the Foundation and give back to the city that I love.

I feel very lucky that I got the chance to work with the Foundation through the Canada Summer Jobs program. I would like to thank all of the staff and volunteers who have made me feel so welcome, and in doing so, have made it very difficult to say goodbye.

Leaving Kingston and the Community Foundation will be extremely bittersweet, but I am confident that this experience has only made me stronger and better equipped to take on the next chapter in my life.

Hopefully I will be coming back to Kingston soon!
